How to clean a tumble dryer filter

Quick answer: After every load, pull out the filter, peel off the fluff and put it in the bin. Wash the filter under a tap now and then and dry it fully. Empty the water tank on a condenser dryer, and clear the condenser and vent hose every few months.

A tumble dryer filter catches the fluff. If it clogs, the dryer works harder, takes longer and gets hotter. Blocked filters and vents are a common reason for dryer fires.

Cleaning the filter takes seconds, so make it a habit every load.

What you will need

Step by step

  1. Switch off and unplug

For anything other than the filter itself, unplug the dryer first. The filter you can clean any time the door is open.

  2. Remove the filter

Open the door. The filter is usually inside the door opening or at the front. Pull it out by its tab.

  3. Remove the fluff

Peel the fluff off with your fingers and put it straight in the bin. Do not tip it on the floor, as it is flammable.

  4. Wash the filter

Every few weeks, wash the filter under a warm tap with a little washing-up liquid and an old toothbrush. Rinse and let it dry completely, because a damp filter blocks airflow.

  5. Clean the filter housing

Use a vacuum with a thin nozzle to clear fluff from the slot where the filter sits and from the door seal. Wipe the door seal.

  6. Empty the water tank (condenser dryers)

If your dryer has a water tank, empty it after each load. Clean the condenser unit every few months by rinsing it under a tap as the manual says.

  7. Check the vent hose (vented dryers)

Unplug the dryer, pull the hose off and shake or vacuum it out. Make sure the vent outlet outside is clear and the hose is not kinked.

Tips

  • Never run a dryer without a filter.
  • Do not overload the drum, and do not dry items soaked in cooking oil or flammable liquid.
  • Register your dryer with the manufacturer and check the recall list at gov.uk.

Stop and get help if

  • The dryer smells burnt, gets very hot to the touch or the filter has melted or scorched.
  • It takes much longer than usual even with clean filters and a clear hose. The heating element or condenser may be faulty.
  • You see scorch marks or the plug is warm. Unplug it and have it checked.
  • Do not leave a tumble dryer running when you are out or asleep.
